Reading Well for Families

NYC Library service are excited to share a fantastic new resource available across all North Yorkshire Libraries from 10th June 2025 – the Reading Well for Families collection, developed by The Reading Agency.

This carefully curated collection of books is for expectant and new parents, carers, and anyone supporting people from pregnancy onwards. It is designed to support the health and wellbeing of families in pregnancy and the early years from conception to age two, offering trusted information, personal stories, illustrated books, poetry, and practical advice on topics such as:

  • Parenting and child development
  • Mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Neurodiversity and special educational needs
  • Coping with loss, separation, and life changes
  • Building stronger family relationships

Reading Well for Families has been co-produced with the Maternal Mental Health Alliance and a panel of people with lived experience of perinatal mental health conditions. Whether you’re working with parents, carers, or children, this collection provides a valuable tool to help families navigate life’s challenges with confidence and compassion during the first 1,001 days.

📚 Available to borrow for free from all North Yorkshire Libraries – no overdue fines
🌐 Accessible to everyone – no referral needed
🤝 Perfect for signposting in your work with families and communities

You can support this by sharing this resource with your networks, and arranging a visit to your local library to explore the collection and discover the wide range of other resources available for families, including our Family Matters collection, Tough Topics packs, Wellbeing Bags, Buzzy Bee’s Honey Hunt reading scheme, rhymetimes and storytimes, and much more.

There will be a soft launch of the new collection at Skipton Library on Friday 20th June, from 10am to 12 noon. You, your clients, and colleagues are warmly invited to drop in, browse the books, and have a chat about how the collection can support families in the community. Also, don’t forget that we will be celebrating Under-5s Week in libraries across North Yorkshire from 16th – 22nd June, with lots of exciting free events, activities, competitions, and information drop-ins for families and children aged 0-4.
