Welcome to the NYSCP January 2025 edition of our e-bulletin.
Happy New Year!
As we step into January and a new year, it’s natural to feel the buzz of new beginnings and the allure of fresh starts (it’s all my social media feed is full of!) However, this year, let’s take a moment to embrace a gentler approach.
January often comes with a lot of pressure to set ambitious goals and make significant changes. But remember, growth and progress don’t always have to be monumental. Sometimes, the most impactful changes come from the smallest adjustments in our daily routines. So, let’s celebrate the journey rather than the destination, focusing on the small victories and finding contentment in the present.
The same is true for the world of safeguarding, which can at times feel overwhelming; “there’s too much to remember”, “how can I keep up to date with everything?” are worries that are common among practitioners. This is hopefully where we at the NYSCP can help, it’s not about knowing all the information, but it’s about knowing where to turn to access that information when you need it (Hint: It’s the NYSCP website!)
2025 holds lots of exciting developments in store for the partnership as we shift focus to the development of some key strategies that will shape our priorities for safeguarding children in North Yorkshire.
Finally, we started the new year with the news that the Director of Children and Families Services for North Yorkshire Council, Stuart Carlton has received a knighthood for his contributions to the welfare of children and families. From all of us at the partnership, congratulations Stuart on such a wonderful accolade!
As always, thank you for being a part of the NYSCP community, and please keep in touch with us if there are elements that you would like to add to bulletin. Here’s to a wonderful January taking us into a positive 2025!
Kat Morrison, Policy and Development Officer.

Multi – Agency Safeguarding Arrangements
Working Together to Safeguard Children 2023 is a multi-agency statutory guidance that sets out expectations for the systems, processes, and ways people work together to help, support, and protect children and their families.
The second chapter strengthens how the multi-agency safeguarding arrangements (local authorities, integrated care boards, and the police) work to safeguard and protect children locally, including with relevant agencies.
Safeguarding leads across North Yorkshire have worked together throughout 2024 to review the arrangements and identify what changes needed to be made to comply with the updated statutory guidance. As a result, the leads, in consultation with relevant agencies agreed on the new multi-agency safeguarding arrangements for North Yorkshire as set out in the document below.
Please take some time to familiarise yourself with the document and share among colleagues and teams.

Online Safety
We know we mentioned this in the December e-bulletin, but January is often the time for experimentation of new gifts given at Christmas, many of which being technology based. It is vital when these new devises are set up that security measures are in place, and there are lots of National resources on hand for all devices, games and apps. Here are some useful links to share:
Keep Children Safe Online: Information, Advice, Support – Internet Matters.

There are also some great bits of information on parenting neurodiverse children in the digital world in this article. Bytes of advice: parenting neurodiverse children in the digital world – Parenting for a Digital Future
The Online Together Project | Internet Matters x Samsung UK, Choose quiz – Internet Matters, Introduction to Balancing Screen Time | Digital Matters is a great, interactive way to get children to engage with online safety, especially during the Christmas break when they might be online a bit more than usual or experimenting with a new device.
A reminder that technology in the bedroom is a growing problem affecting people of all ages Recent studies have found that around 75% of children and 70% of adults use electronic devices in their bedroom or in bed.
Unfortunately, using electronic devices at night can interfere with both the quantity and quality of sleep. To counteract this, an increasing number of sleep experts recommend keeping technology out of the bedroom. Lots of useful tips for having a technology free bedroom (for you and for the children you are working with) can be accessed here: Technology in the Bedroom
Practice Guidance Focus
Each month we like to draw reference to piece of practice guidance that is available on the NYSCP website.

It also shows the clear process of services for locating a child and offering support and guidance for when a child returns to home or care.
