Building Positive Relationships with Children and Young People
We continue to hear from children and young people that the interactions they have with professionals can have a profound impact on how they view their experiences of abuse and the support they receive. We’re often asked for guidance on how to best engage with children and young people, and whilst this should always be an individualised approach, this session shares some general ideas and tips based on the voices of victims, survivors of exploitation and children and young people more generally.
In this session for professionals, we will;
Consider aspects of identity and why this is important when working with children and young people
Consider how biases and assumptions can impact the support a child or young person receives and whether they are perceived as a victim.
Explore what it means to be trauma-informed when working with children and young
Identify and celebrate examples of building successful relationships with young people
Share tips and examples of promising practice that you can use within your role

Audience:
This session is for professionals, volunteers and community members across North Yorkshire, York, Hull and East Riding.

About the Workshop:
For six years, Adam, a young person with lived experience of Child Criminal Exploitation (CCE), faced the brutal realities of the County Lines system. His experience, marked by manipulation, debt bondage, and exploitation, inspired the creation of The Long Game workshop, a youth-led initiative funded by the Community Safety Serious Violence Fund by York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, Policing, Fire and Crime.

The workshop’s purpose is to reduce the risk of young people becoming involved in County Lines and modern slavery across York and North Yorkshire. It provides professionals with the tools they need to identify warning signs, understand the dynamics of organised crime, and take effective action to safeguard vulnerable individuals.

This session is for Professional Training – Designed for those working with children and young people, this training helps professionals spot the signs of CCE and respond appropriately.

By emphasising positive language, upskilling young people, and teaching them to recognise their transferable skills, The Long Game helps youth build confidence, make informed decisions, and break free from exploitation. This workshop is an essential part of reducing the impact of CCE and empowering both individuals and communities to take action.

For organisations that want us to deliver the workshop to their young people or staff, we offer three tailored variations:
Years 7-11 – Interactive, engaging sessions designed for younger students.
College-Age Students – Tailored to older youth, addressing their unique challenges and experiences.
For Professionals – Training for those working directly with young people, focusing on how to identify and intervene when signs of exploitation are present.
Audience
The Long Game is a North Yorkshire and York service, but the topics and themes are relevant for community members, professionals and volunteers across, North Yorkshire, York, Hull and East Riding

This session explores the critical role of dignity in district nursing and its impact on safeguarding adults. Drawing on findings from her PhD research, Emma Stevens sheds light on how everyday nursing practices can uphold or undermine a person’s sense of dignity, recognising this not just as a core nursing value but a powerful safeguard against harm, neglect, and abuse.

The session will offer insights from an ethnographic study in which nurses and patients were observed and interviewed.  Through exploring their real-life examples, the presentation will consider how everyday interactions can either increase the risk of vulnerability or enhance safety and autonomy.

It involves collaboration between children’s services, adult services, and other agencies to ensure ongoing protection and support.

Figures suggest that 21% of 3–to 4-year-olds have their own mobile phone. Children are active users of tech from an early age, but the internet wasn’t designed with children in mind, so, like any parenting task, teaching our children to cross the road safely, for example, it is up to all of us to help our children have safer experiences online. Online safety can feel like a minefield to many parents:
75%, more than seven in 10 parents of children aged 3-17 were concerned about their children seeing inappropriate content.
These free workshops aim to help parents understand how children and young people experience the online world, share resources and tools that could help keep them safe and empower parents to guide them on their journey.
In the workshops, we cover:

The risks and benefits of being online for children
Practical tools and resources to keep children safe online
Online grooming
Online bullying
Social media
Gaming
Mental health and wellbeing

It takes a village to raise a child – yet in times of crisis or need, we often hear that there is no one else around.

Working Together 2023 and The Children’s Social Care National Framework 2023 clearly highlight the importance of connections and networks for our children and young people.

Our role as professionals is to support children and young people and their families in identifying existing support networks and connections children, young people, and their families have as early as possible, seeking to understand who they define as their family, and who is important in their lives.

This might include non-familial relationships, such as lifelong friends, youth workers, teachers, members of their local community or faith-based organisations. It asks that we work hard to strengthen these relationships and bring them together to improve safety and belonging for children and their families.

Course outcomes

• Understand the importance of connections and networks

• Share tools and guidance on how to identify networks

• Hear about the impact on children and young people

• Understand your role in the partnership when thinking about a child and their network.

Audience: This session is for professionals and volunteers working in the York area.

The session aims to raise awareness of Nepacs as a whole and also the new ‘By Your Side’ service. Which aims to improve the well-being of young people and families who access the service. The project also has the intention to prevent criminal behaviour and animosity towards the police/justice system by providing very early intervention support to those individuals in the aftermath of the arrest of a family member/parent.
Nepacs are a charity, 140 years-young, working in the North of England, providing emotional, social and practical support to people who are impacted by contact with either the criminal justice or care systems, particularly the families and children of people in prison, at risk of intergenerational offending, and young people living in care and at risk of offending. Building on Nepacs existing work with families and young people in court and prison visitor settings, providing, for the first time, direct family intervention at a much earlier stage in the justice process.
The aim of the Helpline By your Side project is to improve wellbeing and prevent criminal behaviour and animosity towards the police/justice system by providing very early intervention support to the families and children of individuals in the aftermath of the arrest of a parent/family member.
