LADO – Managing Allegations Against Those Who Work or Volunteer with Children

In accordance with Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023), where an organisation has received an allegation that a volunteer or member of staff who works with children has:

  • behaved in a way that has harmed a child, or may have harmed a child;
  • possibly committed a criminal offence against or related to a child; or
  • behaved or may have behaved in a way that indicates they may not be suitable to work with children; or
  • behaved towards a child or children in a way that indicates they may pose a risk of harm to children

They should contact the Duty Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) on 01609 533080.

A notification should be sent to the LADO within one working day using the LADO Notification Form, giving as much detail as possible.  Completed LADO Notification Forms should be emailed using secure mail to the lado@northyorks.gov.uk or if you do not have a secure email address please contact 01609 533080 within office hours.

Where there is an immediate threat to a child please contact the Police or the contact the Emergency Duty Team (if outside office hours) on 0300 131 2 131.

Whistleblowing is the term used when someone who works in or for an organisation wishes to raise concerns about:
Malpractice,
Wrongdoing,
Illegality or
Risk in the organisation (for example, crimes, civil offences, miscarriages of justice, dangers to health and safety)
Whistleblowing may also include the cover up of any of the above concerns. Whistleblowing applies to raising a concern within the organisation as well as externally, such as to a regulator.

This relates to those instances where a partner organisation is made aware of information that may affect the suitability of a professional, student, or volunteer to work with adult(s) with care and support needs; where such information has originated from activity outside their professional or volunteering role and place of work, and meets the criteria below:
A PiPoT allegation relates to a person who works with adults with care and support needs who has:
behaved in a way that has harmed, or may have harmed an adult or child
possibly committed a criminal offence against, or related to, an adult or child
behaved towards an adult or child in a way that indicates they may pose a risk of harm to adults with care and support needs.

Outline
An online course giving responsible individuals within agencies the information and understanding of policies, procedures and good practice to manage allegations against staff and/or volunteers.

Description
The training will provide an overview of managing allegations against professionals who work with children. The session, delivered by the Local Authority Designated Officers (LADOs) will provide a guide to the referral criteria where there are concerns about professionals. They will explain the role of the LADO and the process undertaken following a referral. The session will also identify the responsibilities of agencies in identifying and responding to these concerns and allegations.

Outcomes
The session aims to develop knowledge and confidence in those who may need to deal with allegations about staff that they employ or manage in their organisations.

This Training is particularly relevant to managers, senior leaders and those in a safeguarding lead role based in North Yorkshire

A one day course giving school staff recruiters the information and understanding to recruit safely and comply with relevant statutory guidance regarding recruitment and selection processes for staff.
