Welcome to the NYSCP November 2024 edition of our e-bulletin
Welcome to the November edition of the NYSCP e bulletin.
Autumn half-term holidays have been and gone for many of us, and we look ahead to, dare I mention it – Christmas! However, before then there is much to do and look forward to including bonfire night and festivities. With this in mind, the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) has shared information relating to firework safety and how to teach this to children, as well as what to do in an emergency. (See information below).
As always, the bulletin includes information on safeguarding news and developments, with this month’s #DoYourPART focussing on the upcoming Anti-Bullying Week and Odd Socks Day on 12th November. If you, like me, struggle to find a pair of socks that are matched and paired, this could be an added incentive to get involved and spread the anti-bullying message by wearing your mismatched socks with pride to promote difference and uniqueness. We encourage all partners to take part in this annual event and have provided information on how to get involved and help parents/carers and their children to do the same, as well as practical advice and information on understanding and dealing with bullying behaviour.
November also brings the start of the NYSCP biennial Safeguarding Self-Assessment Audit for Schools in our locality for 2024 – 25, with findings being shared in time for the start of the 2025 – 26 academic year. We would like to take the opportunity to thank the representatives from our school partners who have contributed to and reviewed the changes and developments to the audit questions and provided invaluable feedback to phase one of this two-phased plan which will see the restructure of the audit tool over the coming years. We hope that this iteration is a development of previous years and that school partners agree that the integrity and usefulness of the audit have been maintained.
The audit tool with supporting guidance on the NYSCP website will be sent to schools the week commencing 4th November with final submissions on 28th February 2025. There will be further information on “drop-in” sessions for support sent via email, this bulletin, and the Red Bag, with this and the audit guidance shared on the NYSCP website under Information for Schools.
A reminder that we are soon approaching the launch of the NYSCP learning event relating to changes to Working Together to Safeguarding Children (2023) in December, and our partner briefing is also available on our website. Working.

Anti-Bullying Week 2024: Choose Respect
This month’s Do your PART highlights Anti Bullying Week. Where practitioners are asked to focus on their practice, research in relation to, and themes arising about bullying in the UK.
Bullying Statistics in the UK – Source ABA
Prevalence: Approximately 40% of young people reported being bullied in the last 12 months.
Frequency: About 6% of young people experience bullying daily, and 9% face it between once a week and once a month.
Forms of Bullying: The most common form is name-calling (26%), followed by exclusion from social groups (18%).
Impact on Education: 21% of children who are bullied daily have truanted in the last 12 months, and 15% have been excluded from school.
Online Bullying: Around 19.1% of children aged 10 to 15 years experienced online bullying in the last year.
1 in 4 young people with SEN (special educational needs) experienced violence (actual or threatened)
What is Anti-Bullying Week?
Anti-Bullying Week is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about bullying every year in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. It aims to highlight the impact of bullying and promote effective ways to prevent and respond to it. Anti-Bullying Week 2024 is coordinated by the Anti-Bullying Alliance but owned by the whole anti-bullying sector.
This year, the theme is “Choose Respect,” encouraging everyone to treat others with kindness and consideration, even when disagreements arise. The theme of Choose Respect has come about following consultation with teachers and pupils by the Anti-Bullying Alliance, with a call to action to empower children and young people to not resort to bullying, even when we disagree, and remind adults to lead by example, online and offline.
When is Anti-Bullying Week?
Anti-Bullying Week will take place from Monday, 11th November to Friday, 15th November. A special event, Odd Socks Day, will be held on Tuesday, 12th November, where people are encouraged to wear odd socks to celebrate individuality and what makes us unique. Odd Socks Day Schools and Workplaces
What Does It Hope to Achieve?
The primary goals of Anti-Bullying Week are to:
Raise Awareness: Educate the public about the prevalence and impact of bullying.
Promote Respect: Encourage positive behaviour and respectful interactions among young people.
Provide Resources: Offer tools and support to schools, parents, and children to help tackle bullying effectively.
Empower Young People: Give children and young people the confidence and strategies to stand up against bullying and support their peers.
What Support Is Available for Partners?
Schools are able to download free teaching resources and themed assemblies. These resources focus on how we can actively choose respect, and what we can do to stop bullying. Resources focus on support from the ABA as well as BBC Bitesize and Jigsaw Education to name but a few.

World Children’s Day 2024
UNICEF’s World Children’s Day in 2024, celebrated on November 20th, focuses on the theme “Listen to the Future.” This annual event marks the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and serves as a Global Day of Action for children, by children. World Children’s Day takes place each year on 20 November. The day marks the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 as well as the Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in 1989. The day aims to ensure that children’s rights are respected, protected, and fulfilled, fostering a better future for all.
This year, the emphasis is on addressing significant global challenges such as conflict, climate change, and disruptive technology, adults are encouraged to listen to the future and understand Children’s ideas for a better world.
Children are encouraged to raise their voices on urgent issues and share their visions for a better world. Activities taking place include kids’ takeovers, where children assume high-visibility roles in various sectors, and public events that highlight children’s rights and priorities.

Instagram New Teen Accounts
In September, Instagram introduced new safety settings for teenage users. These settings are age-specific and “guided” by parents and carers to “better support parents and give them peace of mind that their teens are safe with the right protections in place.” The new ‘teen accounts’ are said to be available in the UK within 60 days of the announcement.
The changes have sparked mixed reactions. The NSPCC described them as “a step in the right direction” but noted that they “can put the emphasis on children and parents needing to keep themselves safe.”

Kinship Care Practice Guidance
The newly launched Kinship Care Practice Guide is designed for leaders in Children’s Social Care. This is the first in a series of national guidance setting out what is known from the strongest available evidence about how to achieve the outcomes in the Children’s Social Care National Framework. The Kinship Care Practice Guide brings together the most robust and up-to-date evidence about the services likely to be most effective for kinship carers. It is underpinned by the first large-scale review of its kind of the international evidence on programmes that best support kinship carers and their children.
The Guide aims to close the gap between practice on the ground, and evidence about what works to improve outcomes for children and kinship families. The guide has key recommendations which can be found here – Foundations Kinship Care Practice Guidance
Road Safety Week – BRAKE
Road Safety Week 2024 will take place from 17 to 23 November 2024 and is organised by the road safety charity BRAKE. Their website states that Road Safety Week is their biggest annual road safety campaign and that this year, they have put road victims at the heart of Road Safety Week. They want to raise awareness of the devastating toll of road crashes and celebrate the work of the incredible people who support families after a road death or serious injury.
Be Bright, Be Seen, Be Safe
With British Summertime now over, increased care due to dark nights and mornings needs to be taken when cycling on North Yorkshire roads. Be Bright, Be Seen, Be Safe is the key message from City of York Council and North Yorkshire Council, to encourage awareness of the importance of children wearing cycle helmets, bright clothing and putting on their bike lights. Upcoming Training: Lunchtime Learning Events
Our lunchtime learning events are free monthly online webinars covering a wide variety of safeguarding themes.
6th November, Professional Curiosity: Professional curiosity is something that can be applied in all relationships, including with children, young people, parents/carers and adults with care and support needs, wider communities, and networks of support. It also applies to the relationships we have with other professionals and the relationship we have with ourselves. The session will explore what professional curiosity is and why it is so fundamental to practice, it will look at the skills needed for professional curiosity as well as what can be barriers. 4th December (2-hour session 12:00 – 14:00) Working Together to Safeguard Children 2023: In this extended webinar, partners will have the opportunity to learn about the changes that have been implemented across the partnership following the release of the new Working Together to Safeguard Children 2023. Statutory partners will each share what the changes to the document have meant in their sector, and the business unit will share key partnership updates in relation to safeguarding structures, documents and processes. Importantly you will learn what the changes mean to you and your practice and how you can continue to disseminate this learning across wider teams.
15th January 2025, NYSCP Developments in Safeguarding Learning Session Vaping Workshop: This workshop will present a summary of findings from insights work into young people and vaping conducted by the Behavioural Science team based within North Yorkshire Public Health. A series of focus groups were conducted in the first half of 2024 with groups of young people aged 11-16. The insights from the focus groups highlight the young people’s views and understanding of vaping, in addition to the factors that may influence young people to vape or not. A series of recommendations have been collated that look at how to these findings can be utilised moving forward.

November 21st celebrates Global Outdoor Learning Day. Hosted by the Institute for Outdoor Learning, Global Outdoor Learning Day unites educators, organisations, and individuals worldwide to celebrate and advocate for the advantages of outdoor education. It emphasises the idea that learning in natural settings greatly enhances physical health, mental wellbeing, and a deeper appreciation of our environment.
This day serves as a platform to highlight various outdoor learning activities, exchange best practices, and foster a love for nature among learners of all ages.
