POVERTY GUIDE FOR SCHOOLS
The North Yorkshire Public Health Team are delighted to share with you the NEW Action on Poverty – A Guide for Schools in North Yorkshire.
The guide aims to help schools to mitigate the impact of poverty within the school environment. It considers many aspects of school life that may place barriers in the way of children’s participation and learning, pose income-related exclusion and stigma or put pressure on low-income families.
Around 21% of children living in North Yorkshire are living in poverty. This equates to around 6 children in a classroom of 30 children. On top of this, many other children will also be living in households experiencing financial hardship and who find school-associated costs a challenge.

The briefing with give an overview of the Action on Poverty guide that provides an approach that schools
can take into consideration every part of school life that may place barriers in the way of children’s participation
and learning, pose income-related exclusion and stigma or put pressure on low-income families.
It includes assessment tools and examples of practical actions that schools can take to mitigate the impact
of poverty within their school environment and improve the school experience for all pupils.
Information will be provided on the free Action on Poverty certification process for schools through
engaging with the self-assessment tools.
