Could you help shape the future for children and young people in North Yorkshire?

Could you help shape the future for children and young people in North Yorkshire?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced strategic leader to take on a highly influential independent role supporting better outcomes for children, young people and families across North Yorkshire.

We are recruiting an Independent Scrutineer and Chair of Two Strategic Boards, bringing together two distinct responsibilities: Chair and Independent Scrutineer of the North Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Partnership (NYSCP) Executive, and Independent Chair of the SEND & Alternative Provision Partnership Board.

The successful candidate will provide independent leadership, scrutiny, challenge and assurance across these important partnership arrangements, working alongside senior leaders from local government, health, police, education and the voluntary and community sector.

For the NYSCP, the role will fulfil the independent scrutiny function required by Working Together to Safeguard Children 2026, helping to assess the effectiveness of multi-agency safeguarding arrangements and supporting continuous improvement. Alongside this, the postholder will independently chair both strategic boards, helping to strengthen governance, accountability and strategic oversight.

We are looking for someone with significant senior leadership experience in safeguarding, children’s services, education, health, policing, inspection, regulation or a related public sector environment. They will need to bring credibility, independence and a strong track record of partnership working and constructive strategic challenge.

This is a unique opportunity to influence strategic direction across safeguarding, inclusion, SEND and alternative provision, ensuring that the voices and experiences of children, young people and families remain central to decision-making.

Key details:

  • £600 per day
  • 30 days per year
  • Contract up to four years
  • Hybrid working, with travel across North Yorkshire
  • Closing date: 30 November 2026
