Welcome to the NYSCP June 2025 edition of our e-bulletin

June is shaping up to be a bumper-filled month for the partnership, packed with events, updates, and opportunities to get involved. So, grab a cuppa, settle in, and let’s dive into what’s coming up (spoiler: it’s a lot!).

We begin with Safeguarding Week, taking place from 16th to 20th June. This year’s programme offers a wide range of free, high-quality online sessions covering all aspects of safeguarding. These sessions are open to all partners and provide a valuable opportunity to enhance knowledge, share best practices, and strengthen our collective safeguarding efforts.

Heather Pearson, Chair of the NYSCP Executive and Independent Scrutineer, emphasises: “Staying informed and educated about safeguarding is crucial for everyone in our community. By attending these sessions, you not only enhance your own knowledge, but also contribute to a safer environment for all.”

From 2nd to 8th June, we also mark Volunteers’ Week, a time to recognise and celebrate the contributions of over 67,000 volunteers across North Yorkshire, supporting more than 7,000 community and voluntary groups. These individuals play a vital role in the wellbeing and resilience of our communities.
Fun fact: If every volunteer in North Yorkshire held hands, they could stretch from Scarborough to Skipton and back—twice! Our volunteers are often the vital eyes and ears in our communities and play such a vital role. Find out more with a special input from Panda from North Yorkshire Youth later in the bulletin.

Running concurrently is Child Safety Week, led by the Child Accident Prevention Trust. The 2025 theme, “Safety is for sharing”, encourages communities to spread awareness and practical advice to help prevent serious childhood injuries.
Key facts include:

  • Accidents remain one of the leading causes of death and serious injury for children in the UK.
  • Many of these incidents—such as burns, falls, poisoning, and road accidents—are preventable through simple, everyday actions.
  • Child Safety Week acts as a catalyst for thousands of safety conversations and activities across the country.

We encourage all partners to engage with the resources available and share them widely within your networks.

As always, we welcome your feedback on how we can make this bulletin more useful and relevant to your work. Please feel free to contact us at nyscp@northyorks.gov.uk with any suggestions or comments.

Volunteers’ week

Celebrating the Heart of Our Youth Work: Volunteers Make the Difference

As part of Volunteers’ Week (2nd–8th June), North Yorkshire Youth is celebrating the dedicated individuals across our communities who give their time and energy to support young people. Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do, helping to run youth clubs, plan exciting activities, and provide safe, welcoming spaces for young people to thrive.

We know that voluntary youth groups play a vital role in building stronger, more connected communities. They offer young people somewhere to go, something to do, and someone to talk to — and none of it would be possible without the passion and commitment of local volunteers.

“Volunteers are the backbone of youth work in North Yorkshire. Whether it’s running a regular club, helping with events, or simply showing up and listening, every bit of time they give makes a huge difference,” says Panda Gledhill Youth Work Manager for North Yorkshire Youth.

As part of the work, funded by North Yorkshire Council, they support voluntary youth work across the county. That includes helping to set up and sustain youth clubs, recruiting and training volunteers, running youth consultations, and supporting groups to access funding, resources and training.

NYY are always keen to hear from individuals, organisations, or communities who are interested in providing opportunities for young people — whether that’s starting a new group, supporting an existing one, or simply exploring what might be possible in your area.

If you’d like to celebrate Volunteers’ Week by getting involved, or if you’d like to find out more about youth services in your town or village, please get in touch.

Working Together to Safeguarding Children – new resources

DfE is pleased to announce that a new children and young people’s illustrated guide to the statutory guidance Working Together to Safeguard Children has been published. This brilliant guide is accompanied by a short animation for children and young people which explains how people who help, support and protect them work together and what they can expect when they need help.

Government has worked in collaboration with children and young people when designing these materials, including the DfE’s Social Care Advisory Board, facilitated by the National Children’s Bureau. We know that children and young people find clear effective communication really important and that they want information to be shared openly with them, so they can understand what services they should receive and how they can access help and support.

The guide and animation can be used by children and young people independently, or with the support of an adult.

A toolkit is available for practitioners to promote the guide and help everyone understand how they can use this guide to support children and young people. This toolkit can be requested by emailing: workingtogether.statutoryguidance@education.gov.uk
