Welcome to the NYSCP August 2024 edition of our e-bulletin

Welcome to the summer holiday edition of the NYSCP e-bulletin. Summer holidays are, we hope, an opportunity to take a break and enjoy the warmer days and lighter evenings (although I still haven’t quite put my winter coat away yet!) We know that “safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility” and with children out of schools for six weeks we are reminded of the vital role that we all play in the wider community in the safeguarding of children while they are out of education settings.

Throughout this bulletin you will find some helpful hints and tips to keep that in mind over the summer months.

As a business unit we will be spending the summer holidays looking at the redesign of our NYSCP website. You may already notice that the home page has changed with clear entry portals for professionals, children and young people, parents and carers and communities. We will be working on designing new pages for children and young people and parents and carers to share those vital safeguarding messages.

All the key documents, guidance and forms will still be accessible, on the professional section, but please do contact nyscp@northyorks.gov.uk if there is something you are struggling to find. Similarly, if you have any feedback on the website or any ideas for any documents or guidance you would like us to include, please get in touch.

We also welcome Stephanie Freeth as a new Policy and Development officer to the NYSCP business unit. Stephanie joins us on a 12-month contract from the MAST and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Finally, thank you to those who took part in the recent consultation events, over 100 professionals from across North Yorkshire took the time to talk to us about the development of the upcoming Being Young in North Yorkshire Strategy and Early Help Strategy. Your voices and opinions (and sharing the voices and experiences of the families you are working with) are vital for the review of the strategies and will help shape the strategic priorities moving forwards.

Enjoy the summer!

Kathryn Morrison, Policy and Development Officer

NYSCP Guidance of the month

In December 2023 the government released a new iteration of Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023). “Working Together” is the multi-agency statutory guidance that sets out expectations for systems, processes and the way people work together to help, support and protect children and their families.

Everyone who works with children and young people are expected to have an understanding of what “Working Together” is and how it impacts their practice.

The NYSCP have consolidated all the information about “Working Together” into one handy webpage on the NYSCP website. On it you will find:

  • What is “Working Together and why do we have it?”
  • What does “Working Together” include and what are the changes that came if for the 2023 review.
  • What the changes to “Working Together” mean in North Yorkshire and what does it mean for me and my role?
  • Links to key documents including a partnership briefing presentation and One Minute Guide of the changes.

You can access the page here: NYSCP (safeguardingchildren.co.uk)

Don’t forget as a partnership we will be working towards publishing the changes to our multi agency safeguarding arrangements following the updates to Working Together by December 2024. We will be running a lunchtime learning event for all practitioners to explain these changes on 4th December. Places can be booked here: North Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Partnership (NYSCP) Developments in Safeguarding Masterclass Webinars – December 2024 | NYES Info

County Lines and Child Exploitation in North Yorkshire: The exploitation of children and young people across North Yorkshire is happening, and with young people out and about more in our communities over the summer it is vital that we all are aware of the signs and how to share vital information and intelligence that can help disrupt what is happening.

Be Aware is the partnership hub for all information about child exploitation with a newly updated guide around County Lines, Cross Border Gangs and Cuckooing

If professionals or volunteers have intelligence that they wish to share this can be done using the Police Community Intelligence Portal. Guidance on sharing intelligence and a link to the portal can be accessed here: NYSCP (safeguardingchildren.co.uk)

Members of the public can report incidents to the police via 101 (or 999 in an emergency) or via the “report” link on the North Yorkshire Police Website Home | North Yorkshire Police.

Information can also be shared anonymously via Crimestoppers or for young people via the Fearless website which is 100% anonymous.

Staying safe online: If you’re looking for something quick, fun and informative to do with children over the summer, test your online safety knowledge with one of our interactive quizzes. Whether you want to help  child to celebrate differences amongst their friends and classmates, or learn to recognise online hate – it’s a great activity to get involved in. The Online Together Project | Internet Matters x Samsung UK

The Internet Watch Foundation have also released a new campaign ‘Think Before You Share‘ which aims to help young people understand the harm of sharing explicit images and videos of themselves and others.

Artificially generated child sexual abuse images: Understanding and responding to concerns  | CSA Centre Artificial intelligence tools are developing at an astonishing speed, and today anyone with access to the internet can easily produce convincing images of almost anything. Sadly, they are also already being used for harmful and illegal purposes – including in the creation of sexual imagery of children.

To help professionals, CSA Assistant Director Lisa McCrindle answers many of the questions you may have about artificially generated child sexual abuse material. This includes what it is, whether it is illegal, and how to respond to concerns involving the children and young people, and adults, you work with.
