Seasonal greetings and welcome to the NYSCP December 2022 edition of our e-bulletin
As the year comes to an end and I reflect on 2022, it is amazing to see how much change has taken place. We have seen the country return to a new normal as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ukrainian crisis, three Prime Ministers, the massive impact of price rises in fuel and the cost of living, and of course the loss of Queen Elizabeth II, and the beginning of the Coralean era with the start of the reign of King Charles III.
As a partnership we have seen a lot of change in the people we work with, as we said goodbye to our Independent Scrutineer, Maggie Atkinson and our Partnership Manager James Parkes. We have seen many people change across our partners and welcomed our new Partnership Manager, Hannah Ellingworth, and our new Executive Chair and Independent Scrutineer, Heather Pearson.
As we move forward into 2023 the NYSCP will continue to build on its delivery of Being Young in North Yorkshire and our vision the “all children and young people are safe, happy, healthy and able to achieve in North Yorkshire.”
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Appeal for PARENTS to have early & positive conversations with their TEENS
Leah was 15 when she lost her life in a car park in Northallerton after taking two ‘MDMA bombs’ (a powder form of Ecstasy), whilst with a group of friends. This campaign was inspired by the tragic story of Leah who died after taking drugs in 2019.
Kerry Roberts, Leah’s mother wants to help other parents to have proactive and positive conversations with their children about drugs and alcohol and so has teamed up with Commissioner Zoë to create the “NotMyChild” campaign.
Kerry Roberts said:
“For years we have been telling our children to “just say no” to drugs, and in an ideal world maybe that would be enough, but the world is complicated, growing up is hard, and young people are probably going to take risks, so as parents we need to be having different conversations with them.
On the day Leah died, she wouldn’t have understood that the drugs she took would seriously harm her, let alone end her life. Although I had the ‘drugs talk’ with her, we didn’t talk about all of the things that are in the NotMyChild campaign.
Because we can’t be with our children all the time, I would encourage all parents, guardians and care givers to talk calmly with their own teenagers, before anything goes wrong, and to support them to understand the risks associated with different types of drugs, so that they have the facts that they need, to set their own boundaries and to make their own safe choices”.
